Eco committee

The Eco-committee for this year are:

Luke Fogerty and Alice Deverill
Alfie Robson and Alys Edwards
Chanel Walton and Dylan Mahoney
Toby Parks and Poppy Coles
Callum Morris and Olivia Baron

We are applying for out platinum flag this year so the committee have already been busy to try and solve the litter problem by organising a poster competition, new recycling bins for plastics and will organise a whole school litter pick soon.

They have been on a walk over the Billy Wynt to look at the plant and animal life with the ecologist Tim Orrell and will go again in the summer to compare the wildlife.

We are also hoping to visit Aberthaw power station to learn more about energy production in Wales and then present out findings to the school in an assembly.  The committee members will also read the meters in school with Mr Protheroe, the caretaker, and keep a record of the schools water, gas and electricity usage.

We also have plans to build a greenhouse made out of plastic bottles.  Mr Protheroe will help with the construction of the frame but please can everyone start collecting 2 litre plastic bottles and keep them at home until we are ready to start the greenhouse.  Any help with the build will be much appreciated.

We really need to get the allotment beds ready for spring so if anyone has and good soil or compost at home please bring it in to school.

Keep our pavements clean!

The eco-committee have been putting up new posters to warn people of the penalties for not picking up their dog mess. Mr Tim Jones from RCT Street cleaning department worked with the eco-committee to help raise the profile of our concerns about the menace of dog fouling, especially along the alley behind the school. We discussed the dangers of dog mess as well as the inconvenience it can cause.

Our Third Green Flag!

Look how proud we are to raise our third Green Flag. Well done to Mrs Bannister and the Eco committee.

Brilliant News!

Hurray! Well done the Eco-committee and all the pupils and staff who helped us gain our 3rd Green Flag. We join a very small number of schools in Wales who have achieved this accolade! In 2 years time we will be eligible to apply for the Platinum Flag which only 2 schools is Wales have!

I would particularly like to thank Lewis Collins, Charlotte Williams and Bailey Owen who took the Inspectors around the school and pointed out all of the things we do at Penygawsi to make our school a better and greener place. The inspectors said that the children were 'outstanding'. I would also like to thank Mr Protheroe who takes committee members to read the meters every week and who helps keep the school and the grounds tidy.

A full feedback report and our new green flag will be sent to us soon and we can have a celebration! A fantastic result! Keep up the good work to make our world a better place!

KEEP PENYGAWSI CLEAN

This afternoon the ESDGC/Fairtrade committee walked around the local area accompanied by PC Daniels, Tim Jones (RCT Street Cleaning) and the press. The aim was to look for ways to improve Penygawsi, which included looking for graffiti, vandalism and litter. The children were alarmed by what they saw under the subways and the litter outside the school. The children took photographs and plotted the problems on a map which Tim Jones will now ensure that these areas are cleaned. As a result of today a LITTER SIGN has been placed on the lampost outside the school warning people that if they are caught littering they will be fined £75. The committee are committed to improving the local environment as well as supporting global initiatives. Diolch committee for all your hard work.
