New Eco-committee

Welcome to the new Eco-committee. They are:

Also on the committee are Mrs Bull and the governor representative is Mrs Schoen.

We have already made new posters to remind everyone to turn off taps and lights, to recycle and to put litter in the bins. The Eco-notice board has been up dated. The committee will take it in turns to read the meters with Mr Protheroe to record our energy consumption every week. The information will be relayed to the school weekly in assembly so that we are reminded to try and conserve energy all the time.

We have decided that this year our priorities should be to improve the school grounds and to keep on top of the litter problem. If you have any suggestions please contact a member of the Eco-committee.

Committee Meeting

The ESDGC Committee met today with PC Daniels and Tim Jones (RCT Street Cleaning Services) to discuss how we can improve our local environment. The Committee will be taking a walk around the Penygawsi area next week looking for problems that we are hoping to be able to tidy with the support of other agencies. We will update you next week with what was found and which agencies will be involved in the clean up!

Eco news

Thank you very much to all the Eco-committee who helped man the Eco stall at the Fete. We had great fun throwing plastic bottles into a reclycling bag. Well done to the wordsearch and colouring competition winners!

We are trying to cut down our energy usage in Penygawsi School and so members of the Eco-committee are reading the water, gas and electricuty meters with Mr Protheroe every week. They then work out how much energy we have used and tell the whole school so that we can try really hard to turn off taps and turn off lights if we don't need them. Let us see how well we can do! A big 'Thank You' to Mr Protheroe for his help.

Eco Notice Board

We are launching a whole school competition to design posters for our new and improved Eco Notice Board. We are looking for striking posters with a message that relates directly to Penygawsi School and how we should all be helping to improve our environment. These could be about litter, conserving paper, water, electricity, heat etc. There will be prizes for all winners! Entries to be handed to an Eco-committee member by Tuesday 4th May. Have fun!

RWANDA RESTORED

CHILDREN IN NEED

Thanks to your generosity, we have raised over £126 from just 50p donations for the children not wearing their uniform.

Operation Christmas Child

Well done everybody! We collected 69 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Thank you all for your generosity and thoughtfulness. It is good to be thinking of people less fortunate than ourselves at this time of year. The shoeboxes were collected on Monday and have now gone to the warehouse. The children helped load the van.

Children in Need

As I'm sure everyone is aware, Children in Need is happening on Friday 20th November and we are going dotty for it! Well, spotty really, but dotty sounds better. . .

Children are welcome to come to school in their own clothes, but there must be something spotty about them. I'll leave the details to your imagination, but please, no measles!

Now, the important bit. Children in Need is all about raising money and this year we're collecting 50p pieces with the donation request of one coin per child.

Year 4 Environmental Services Talk

Yesterday, the pupils in year 4 had a talk from support officers from the Environmental Services division of RCT. These are the people who have been helping is with our efforts to get certain dog owners to clear up after their dogs.

They talked about many aspects of the environment including fly tipping and general rubbish and waste issues. After their talk some of the class were asked to go on a short walk to put up signs and stickers asking dog owners to be responsible.

They all had a good time discussing and learning about these important issues.

Penygawsi's Harvest

I'd like to thank everybody for their contributions to our Harvest Festival last Tuesday. Our visitors from Parc Newydd Care Home, Penygawsi Community Centre and the grandparents of children the Early Years had a lovely time watching the many different performances given by all of our classes. Everyone who came was given something to take away and we were also able to send a large delivery of food to Pontyclun Community Centre for the local pensioners who have a luncheon club on Fridays.

This year we asked the children from Classes 3 to 9 to bring a financial donation instead of food, so that we can make a difference in the global community as well as local. Your generosity enabled us to raise £210.16 for Rwanda Restored.

Keep Wales Tidy

For Keep Wales Tidy Week we will be carrying out a litter pick in the school grounds.  We hope to do this on Thursday 24th September, weather permitting.  Each class will take a turn at collecting litter using gloves and litter pickers provided by Keep Wales Tidy and we hope to make our school and surrounding area look as tidy as possible.   This should encourage the children to keep litter to a minimum in the future.  We are hoping to have a write up and photographs in the Llantrisant Observer!  We will keep you posted.

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

As part of our work on Global Citizenship, we have developed links with a charity Rwanda Restored.

We have had Mr Geoff Lane, who started the charity in 2006, to come to school to explain the work of the charity and how we can support it.

We have raised money through selling the products the people in Rwanda have made, as well as having a coffee morning to raise funds and inviting the charity to have stall at our school fete.

In a meeting at the beginning of the year the school council was tyring to decide what to do with the school uniform which is left in school and never claimed. We decided that once every effort has been made to get the uniform back to the right pupils, the left over unclaimed uniform would be sent to support the charity. The last bag of uniform went last week.



Our support of charities both in our country and abroad is an important part of our work to become Global Citizens. We hope to continue and develop our charity work in the future.

PENYGAWSI SUMMER SHOWCASE

Dear Parents / Guardians,

You will receive shortly a letter to invite you to attend a Summer Showcase to celebrate the end of a wonderful year at Penygawsi.

We have decided that it would be appropriate to bring together our 'Fair Trade Picnic' day and Showcase to the same date.

Welcome to our Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship Blog. This Blog will provide information on our work as a school to promote the children's understanding of being a Global Citizen and working to promote Sustainable Development.

If it is to succeed, ESDGC needs to be addressed by the whole school community, not just teachers and learners, but parents, carers, governors, visitors and non-teaching staff. To be effective ESDGC needs to be embedded across the curriculum and infused throughout the life of the school.

We will use our Blog to discuss our links with Rwanda, our promotion of Fair Trade products and our ongoing work to obtain our third consecutive Eco School Green Flag Award. Ideas and comments will be requested on ESDGC via our School Forum Blog in the near future. Your ideas are always welcomed.
